Connecting to The Veil of Evermist Story
This one shot is designed to be a standalone story with no connection to the rest of The Veil of Evermist beside thematic similarities. However, it is not too difficult to adjust this adventure so it could serve as a short one shot session before progressing to the first story in The Veil of Evermist: The Curse of Coral Cove. Following are the necessary adjustments.

Story:
Rather than slotting this one shot into an existing adventure with existing characters, Home is Where the Heart Isn’t will become the first session played with the group intent on experiencing the entirety of The Veil of Evermist. To this end, the party finds themselves as a travelling group on the road toward a port town, where they will board a vessel bound for Evermist Isle to the far north. Their reasons for going to Evermist Isle are up to the GM and players, but they can range from being inhabitants of Evermist Isle heading home after a long journey, to being fugitives on the run from the law, or wishing to escape a dark past and seeking a new life in a new land. Whichever is chosen, while the players are aboard the ship, the events of The Curse of Coral Cove will occur, which then leads into The Veil of Evermist: Book 1.
Level and Challenge:
Since The Curse of Coral Cove was designed to bring players from 1st level to 3rd over several sessions, Home is Where the Heart Isn’t will need to be adjusted to be suitable for 1st level characters rather than 3rd. When players finish this one shot, they will reach 2nd level, and begin The Curse of Coral Cove at 2nd level rather than 3rd. However, they will still reach 3rd level at the same point in the story in that adventure, and the early combat scenarios will need to be adjusted for 2nd level characters rather than 1st.
In order for this one shot to be suitable to 1st level characters, following are the changes to the challenges throughout:
- Every DC across the one-shot is lowered by 2.
- The door in the back hallway (room 6) has an AC of 16 and 40 HP.
- The infecto ludicro, tendril spawn and Domus Mala have changes to their stat blocks:
